Although I'm horrible with maintaining my commitments to challenges, this is one I've been eagerly anticipating since it will be my first year joining. For the sixth year in a row, founder and host of the RIP Challenge, Carl at Stainless Steel Droppings' annual challenge runs from September 1, 2011 through October 31, 2011. It celebrates all books and films that are creepy, mysterious, Gothic, and ghoulish...
Anyone can join, so if you enjoy reading everything from Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier to a contemporary crime and mystery novelist, why not jump in?
Peril the First is the level I think I'll join. I'll be reading four books of any length that fits into R.I.P. literature. As Carl writes, "It could be Stephen King or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Ian Fleming, or Edgar Allan Poe...or anyone in between."
Here are my options. What do you think? Is there one on here that you've read and you know I have to read it? Let me know!
- Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier
- The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton, by Edith Wharton
- The Keeper of Lost Causes, by Jussi Adler-Olsen
- The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher, by Kate Summerscale
- The Devouring, by Simon Holt (YA)
- The Meaning of Night, by Michael Cox
- A Discovery of Witches, by Deborah E. Harkness
- Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, by Ransom Riggs
- The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova (I've read this twice. Once, when it first came out in 2005, and then last year for my On the Ledge Readalongs site. This year, I'm considering the audiobook because I've heard such accolades on the production).
- Her Fearful Symmetry, by Audrey Niffenegger
- In the Woods, by Tana French
- The Woman in Black, by Susan Hill. (Daniel Radcliffe will soon be starring in the film version).
- The Gallows Curse, by Andrew Hammond (YA)
Carl is also hosting a few readalongs as well, and I'm definitely going to dive into The Lantern, by Deborah Lawrenson. I've read a few reviews already that have me chomping at the bit to read it.
Side Note: I made it to Virginia Beach! The husband, the dog, the cat and me finally made it to our new home, received our furniture and we are slowly unpacking.
Dinner in Virginia Beach |
Holy heck--you've got a ton of good books on your list. I wouldn't even know where to start. Rebecca is phenomenal. I also enjoyed The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, In the Woods, The Historian and Her Fearful Symmetry. I hope to read Miss Peregrine and A Discovery of Witches for this RIP too.
ReplyDeleteOoooooooooo what a lovely picture from dinner! So glad everything worked out.
ReplyDeleteYou have got some great books picked out! I just finished In The Woods and loved it, I'm so glad its a series. Have fun reading!
ReplyDeleteGlad you are home safely.
ReplyDeleteI am going to join also and have Peculiar Children on my list too.
Yes, Rebecca! One of my all time favorite books. Du Maurier is a master (mistress?) of creepy atmosphere. Have fun with the challenge. I know I will :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you made it up there safe and sound. I'm sure you'll be settled before you know it. We're going to miss you and Jason at SIBA this year. (By the way tell Jason to root for the Hokies tomorrow!) Have fun with the challenge!
ReplyDeleteGlad you made it through the storm safely and to your new home. Enjoy RIP. It's always a fun challenge!
ReplyDeleteHope you settle in quickly!
ReplyDeleteNice that you're also joining in. Rebecca is a must, as is Her Fearful Symmetry. Hope you have great fun with this challenge.
So glad you are joining in!!
ReplyDeleteI've requested The Lantern, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children , and The Woman in Black from the library. Fingers crossed I get them in the next two months.
A Discovery of Witches is pretty good. I reviewed it. Her Fearful Symmetry was a bit disappointing. Great writing but, hm. Let me know how you like it. The Historian is good but long. FYI. I love Tana French and In the Woods is awesome. I've heard some people didn't like it as much though so be forewarned. What else. Oh. Rebecca is AWESOME. Good choice!
I am reading Miss Peregrine's right now and so far it is really good. Hard to put it down and suspect it will be a fast read, at the rate I'm going. I really enjoyed both Rebecca and THe Short Stories of Edith Wharton.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check out the others on your list. I love to get more ideas for R.I.P.!
Lots of great books on your list. You really must read Rebecca!!
ReplyDeleteI'm in the minority who didn't care for A Discovery of Witches.......but I really liked Her Fearful Symmetry - nothing like opposing opinions to confuse you.
I have Miss Peregrine waiting to be picked up from the library. This is a fun challenge.
Of course everyone must do RIP! It is a requirement for the fall. You MUST read Rebecca, you MUST read In the Woods. The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher was pretty good, good old true crime, but was a slow read for me. And if you can ignore the awesomeness of The Time Traveler's Wife, you could enjoy Her Fearful Symmetry. I enjoyed it. (Good luck with your new home!)
ReplyDeleteGlad you made it safely to Virginia Beach. Hasn't the weather been fantastic?
ReplyDeleteI am in the middle of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and it is a quick and enjoyable read.
E-mail me at jgoffice(at)cox(dot)net when you get all settled in and we'll get together and chat books and stuff. Welcome to Virginia Beach.
I LOVE Rebecca! It's perfect for this type of challenge. The only other book I've read on your list is The Historian, which I enjoyed but not enough to read it again, I don't think.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the challenge!
Ooh, Good Luck with this challenge! I think that you've picked a lot of great books for yourself, some of which I have also read. I can't wait to see your reviews!
ReplyDeleteYou've got some great books chosen. THE LANTERN caught my eye, as did THE KEEPER OF LOST CAUSES and THE DISCOVERY OF WITCHES. I too was going to listen to THE HISTORIAN on audio. In fact, it's all queued up and ready to go!
ReplyDeleteHave fun!
Hooray for arriving safely! I hope you read Rebecca -- it's marvelous. Delish! A desert island favorite.
ReplyDeleteGlad you made it safely to Virginia. And I'm glad you're joining in in RIP VI. I've seen the Edith Wharton ghost stories on several lists, so I might have to check those out myself.
